खाटू श्याम जी की कहानी महाभारत काल से शुरू होती है। उनका नाम बर्बरीक था। बर्बरीक भीम के पोते और घटोत्कच के पुत्र थे। वह बचपन से ही एक महान योद्धा थे। उन्होंने युद्ध कला अपनी माँ से सीखी थी। बर्बरीक देवी शक्ति के परम भक्त थे।
एक बार बर्बरीक ने देवी शक्ति को प्रसन्न करने के लिए घोर तपस्या की। उनकी कठोर तपस्या से प्रभावित होकर देवी शक्ति उनके सामने प्रकट हुईं और बोलीं, “मेरे बच्चे, मैं तुम्हारी तपस्या से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूँ, बताओ, तुम क्या वरदान चाहते हो?” बर्बरीक ने उत्तर दिया, “आपने तो मुझे दर्शन देकर ही कृतार्थ कर दिया है, अब मेरी एक ही इच्छा है। कृपया मुझ पर सदैव आशीर्वाद बनाए रखें। मैं अपना संपूर्ण जीवन दीन दुखियों की सहायता करने में व्यतीत करना चाहता हूँ।” देवी शक्ति ने तुरंत उनका अनुरोध स्वीकार कर लिया और कहा, “आप हमेशा कमजोरों का सहारा बनेंगे। मैं आपको एक ऐसी शक्ति प्रदान करूँगी जो तीनों लोकों में किसी के पास नहीं है। लेकिन याद रखें, आपको कभी भी इन शक्तियों का दुरुपयोग नहीं करना चाहिए।” तब देवी शक्ति ने बर्बरीक को तीन दिव्य बाण प्रदान किए जो अपने लक्ष्य को भेदकर वापस लौट सकते थे। इस कारण बर्बरीक अजेय हो गया।
इसके बाद बर्बरीक अपनी माँ के पास लौटे और उन्हें देवी शक्ति से मिले वरदान के बारे में बताया। उसने कहा, “माँ, मैं भी कौरवों और पांडवों के युद्ध में भाग लेना चाहता हूँ। मेरी उस युद्ध में भाग लेने की प्रबल इच्छा है।” जवाब में, उनकी मां ने कहा, “मेरे बेटे बर्बरीक, मैं जानती हूँ की तुम एक महान योद्धा हो, इसलिए मैं तुम्हें नहीं रोकूंगी। लेकिन मुझसे वादा करो की के तुम हारे का सहारा बनोगे। तुम युद्ध में हारने वाले की तरफ से ही लड़ोगे।” बर्बरीक ने अपनी माँ को वचन दिया की वह हारने वाले पक्ष की तरफ से लड़ेगा। अपनी माँ को वचन देकर बर्बरीक घोड़ी पर सवार होकर और देवी शक्ति द्वारा प्रदत्त तीन बाण लेकर युद्धभूमि के लिए निकल पड़े।
भगवान कृष्ण तो अंतर्यामी थे। वो ये सब लीला होते हुए देख रहे थे। वह जानते थे की बर्बरीक केवल उसी पक्ष की ओर से लड़ेगा जो हार रहा होगा, और वह यह भी जानते थे की कौरवों को बर्बरीक की प्रतिज्ञा के बारे में पता था। यदि बर्बरीक कौरवों के लिए लड़ता है, तो इससे पांडव कमजोर हो जायेंगे, लेकिन यदि वो बाद में पांडवों से मिल जाता है तो इससे दोनों पक्षों का विनाश हो जाएगा और केवल बर्बरीक ही बचेगा।
भगवान श्री कृष्ण के पास बर्बरीक को रोकने का एक ही रास्ता था, और वो था उसका शीश दान में मांग लेना। अत: उन्होंने ब्राह्मण का वेश धारण कर बर्बरीक को रास्ते में रोक लिया। उन्होंने पूछा, “हे वीर योद्धा, आप कौन हैं? यह कुरुक्षेत्र का युद्धक्षेत्र है, आप कौरवों और पांडवों के बीच युद्ध में क्या कर रहे हैं?”
तब बर्बरीक ने अपना परिचय देते हुए कहा, “हे ब्राह्मण, मैं घटोत्कच का पुत्र हूँ, मेरा नाम बर्बरीक है। कृपया मेरा प्रणाम स्वीकार करें। मैं महाभारत के युद्ध में भाग लेने आया हूँ।”
तब ब्राह्मण बने श्री कृष्ण ने कहा, “यह कैसे संभव हो सकता है, बेटे? केवल तीन बाणों के साथ, तुम युद्ध में भाग लेने की योजना कैसे बना रहे हो? ये बाण शत्रु सेना को हराने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं होंगे।”
बर्बरीक ने उत्तर दिया, “हे ब्राह्मण, ये बाण साधारण नहीं हैं। इनमें से केवल एक ही पूरी शत्रु सेना को परास्त करने के लिए पर्याप्त है। लक्ष्य प्राप्त करने के बाद बाण वापस मेरे तरकश में आ जायेगा।”
तब ब्राह्मण बने श्री कृष्ण ने बर्बरीक को चुनौती दी, “ठीक है, इस पीपल के पेड़ के सभी पत्तों को अपने बाणों से भेदकर सिद्ध करो।”
बर्बरीक ने चुनौती स्वीकार की और तीर चलाया। बर्बरीक के बाण ने पीपल के पेड़ के सभी पत्तों को सफलतापूर्वक छेद दिया और वापस आकर ब्राह्मण रूपी श्रीकृष्ण के पैरों के आसपास चक्कर काटने लगा क्योंकि श्री कृष्ण ने एक पत्ता अपने पैर के नीचे छुपाया था। यह देखकर बर्बरीक ने कहा, “हे ब्राह्मण! कृपया अपना पैर हटा लो, अन्यथा तुम्हारा पैर भी छलनी हो जाएगा। ये बाण अपने लक्ष्य को भेदे बिना वापस नहीं लौटते।”
श्रीकृष्ण समझ गए की यदि मैं सभी पांडव भाईयों को वास्तविक युद्धभूमि में अलग-अलग स्थानों पर छिपा दूँ, तब भी बर्बरीक के बाण किसी को नहीं छोड़ेंगे। यह सोचकर ब्राह्मण बने श्रीकृष्ण ने बर्बरीक से उसका शीश दान में मांगने की इच्छा प्रकट की और पूछा की क्या वह ऐसा कर सकता है?
बर्बरीक समझ गए की यह ब्राह्मण कोई साधारण ब्राह्मण नहीं है। उन्होंने पूछा, “आप कौन हैं? कृपया मुझे अपना वास्तविक रूप दिखाईए।”
बर्बरीक की प्रार्थना करने पर भगवान कृष्ण अपने रूप में आ जाते हैं और बर्बरीक उन्हें प्रणाम करके कहते हैं, हे वासुदेव कृष्ण मैं आपको अपना सिर अवश्य दे दूँगा, लेकिन मेरी दो इच्छाएं हैं। पेहली तो ये की आप स्वयं मेरी चिता को अग्नि देंगे और दूसरी ये की मैं अंत तक महाभारत का युद्ध देखना चाहता हूँ।”
भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा, ऐसा ही होगा पुत्र और कलयुग में लोग तुम्हें हारे का सहारा कहेंगे, श्याम नाम से पुकारेंगे। कलयुग में मेरे नाम से ही तुम्हारी पूजा होगी। कलयुग में तुम्हें खाटू श्याम नाम से पूजा जाएगा। (फाल्गुन माह की द्वादशी को बर्बरीक ने अपना शीश दान दिया था)
खाटू श्याम बाबा की आरती पढेबर्बरीक को भगवान ब्रह्मा ने श्राप दिया था, जिसके अनुसार उसकी मृत्यु पृथ्वी पर भगवान कृष्ण के हाथों होनी थी और तभी वह श्राप से मुक्त होगा। बर्बरीक का सिर महाभारत के युद्धक्षेत्र के पास एक पहाड़ी पर रख दिया गया, जहाँ से उन्होंने पूरा युद्ध देखा।
युद्ध के अंत में पांडवों में इस बात पर बहस होने लगी की युद्ध में जीत का श्रेय किसे दिया जाए। इस पर भगवान श्री कृष्ण बोले, बर्बरीक का शीश संपूर्ण युद्ध का साक्षी है। अतह उससे बेहतर निर्णायक भला कौन हो सकता है? फिर सभी पांडव श्रीकृष्ण के साथ बर्बरीक के पास जाते है और उसे पूछते है, “पौत्र, तुमने युद्ध को निकट से देखा है, क्या तुम हमें बता सकते हो की इसे जीतने का श्रेय किसको जाता है?” तब बर्बरीक ने कहाँ, “श्री कृष्ण ने ही इस युद्ध में विजयप्राप्त कराने में सबसे महान कार्य किया है। उनकी शिक्षा, उनकी उपस्थिति, उनकी युद्धनीति निर्णायक थी। मुझे तो युद्ध भूमि में सिर्फ वासुदेव कृष्ण का सुदर्शन घूमता हुआ दिखाई दे रहा था जो की शत्रु सेना को काट रहा था। इस धर्मयुद्ध को जीतने का संपूर्ण श्रेय भगवान श्री कृष्ण को ही जाता है।”
इसके बाद सभी पांडवों ने बर्बरीक के फैसले की सराहना की और भगवान कृष्ण से क्षमा मांगी, क्योंकि वो जानते थे यदि स्वयं वासुदेव न होते तो यह धर्म युद्ध जीतना असंभव था। धर्म की विजय स्वयं वासुदेव कृष्ण के कारण ही हुई थी। भगवान कृष्ण के आशीर्वाद से बर्बरीक को कलयुग में श्याम नाम से पुकारा जाने लगा। आज भी खाटू श्याम जी महाराज के अनेकों भक्त रोज़ाना उनके दर्शन करने आते हैं और उनसे मनवांछित फ़ल की प्राप्ति भी करते हैं।
Story of Khatu Shyam in English
The story of Khatushyam Ji begins from the time of the Mahabharata. His name was Barbarik. Barbarik was the grandson of Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha. He was a great warrior from his childhood. He had learned the art of warfare from his mother. Barbarik was a devout follower of the goddess Shakti.
Once, Barbarik performed intense penance to please goddess Shakti. Impressed by his rigorous penance, Goddess Shakti appeared before him and said, “My child, I am extremely pleased with your penance. Tell me, what boon do you desire?” Barbarik replied, “You have already fulfilled my heart’s desire by granting me your divine vision. Now, I have only one wish. Please always bless me. I want to dedicate my entire life to helping the unfortunate.” Goddess Shakti immediately granted his request and said, “You will always be a support to the weak. I will bestow upon you a power that no one in the three worlds possesses. But remember, you must never misuse these powers.” Goddess Shakti then bestowed upon Barbarik three divine arrows that could hit their target and return to him. This is why Barbarik became invincible.
After this, barbarik returned to his mother and told her about the boon granted by Goddess Shakti. He said, “Mother, I also want to participate in the battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. I have a strong desire to be a part of that war.” in response, his mother said, “My son Barbarik, I know you are a great warrior, so I won’t stop you. But promise me that you will fight on the side of the losing party. I trust you to fight for the side that is destined to lose.” barbarik solemnly promised his mother that he would fight on the side of the losing party. After giving a promise to his mother, barbarik left for the battlefield riding a mare and carrying three arrows given by Goddess Shakti.
Lord Krishna possessed omniscience. He saw everything happening and knew that Barbarik would only fight for the side that was losing, and he also knew that the Kauravas were aware of Barbarik’s pledge. So, if Barbarik fought for the Kauravas, it would weaken the Pandavas. But if he joined the Pandavas later, it would lead to the destruction of both sides and only Barbarik would remain.
Lord Shri Krishna had only one way to stop Barbarika and ask for his head as a donation. So, he disguised himself as a Brahmin and stopped Barbarika on the way. He asked, “o mighty warrior, who are you? This is the battlefield of Kurukshetra, what are you doing in the battle between the Kauravas and Pandavas?”
Barbarika then introduced himself, saying, “O Brahmin, I am the son of Ghatotkacha, named Barbarika. Please accept my greetings. I have come to participate in the Mahabharata battle.”
Then Shri Krishna, who became a Brahmin said, “How can this be possible, my son? With just three arrows, how do you plan to participate in the war? These arrows won’t be enough to defeat the enemy forces.”
Barbarika replied, “o brahmin, these arrows are not ordinary. Only one of them is sufficient to defeat the entire enemy army. After achieving the target, the arrow will return to my quiver.”
Brahmin-incarnate Shri Krishna then challenged Barbarika, “Alright, prove it by piercing all the leaves of this peepal tree with your arrows.”
Barbarika accepted the challenge and shot his arrows. He successfully pierced all the leaves of the tree, except for one hidden under Shri Krishna’s feet. Seeing this, Barbarika said, “O Brahmin, please move your foot; otherwise, your foot will also get pierced. These arrows do not return without hitting their target.”
Shri Krishna understood that even if I hid all the Pandava brothers in different places on the real battlefield so that they could be saved from becoming victims of Barbarik, Barbarik’s arrows would not spare anyone. Thinking this, Shri Krishna, who became a Brahmin, expressed his desire to ask for his head as a donation from Barbarik and whether he could do this.
Barbarika understood that this Brahmin was no ordinary Brahmin. He asked, “Who are you? Please let me know your real form.”
Lord Krishna comes in his own form and Barbarik bows to him and says, o Vasudev Krishna, I will definitely give you my head, but I have two wishes. The first is that you will personally light my pyre, and second, I want to see Mahabharata war till the end.”
Lord Shri Krishna said, in Kalyug people will call you the support of the defeated, they will call you by the name Shyam. You will be worshiped in Kalyug only in my name. In Kalyug you will be worshiped with the name Khatu Shyam. (फाल्गुन माह की द्वादशी को बर्बरीक ने अपने शीश का दान दिया था)
Barbarik was cursed by lord Brahma, according to which his death would be by lord Krishna on the earth, and only then he would be freed from the curse. Barbarik’s head was placed on a hill near the battlefield of the Mahabharata, from where he witnessed the entire war.
At the end of the battle, there was a debate among the Pandavas about who should be credited for the victory in the war. Lord Krishna spoke, Barbarik’s head had witnessed the entire battle, so who could be a better judge of victory? All the Pandavas then went to Barbarik and asked him, “Barbarik, you have closely observed the war, can you tell us who deserves the credit for winning it?” lord Krishna’s presence, teachings, and war strategy were decisive. To me, the battlefield seemed to be dominated solely by Vasudev Krishna, who was cutting down the enemy forces. The entire credit for winning this righteous war goes to lord Shri Krishna.
After this, all the Pandavas praised Barbarik’s judgment and asked for forgiveness from lord Krishna, knowing that without lord Krishna, it would have been impossible to win this righteous war. The victory of righteousness was achieved solely because of lord Vasudev Krishna. With the blessing of lord Krishna, Barbarik came to be known as Shyam in the Kalyug. Even today, many devotees visit the temple of Khatushyam Ji Maharaj daily, seeking his darshan and blessings to fulfill their wishes.
