Career

First-person from Kishore Kumar’s family who became a star in Hindi films is Ashok Kumar. Since then their family frequently visiting Bombay. At that time Abhas Kumar changed his name to Kishore Kumar and started his career in Bombay Talkies as a Chorus Singer.

Kishore Kumar first appeared on-screen in the Hindi film Shikari (1946) in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role.

Khemchand Prakash who was the music director in Hindi films gave Kishore Kumar the first chance to sing. Kishore Kumar’s first Hindi song was ‘Marne Ki Duayen Kyon Mangu‘ for the film Ziddi (1948). After this, he received many offers from the Hindi film industry.

Kishore Kumar’s big brother Ashok Kumar wanted him to become an actor. During 1946-1955 Kishore Kumar appeared in around 22 films and many of the films flopped as a result, his interest in acting dropped. Later after the success of a few films, he developed an interest in acting and become successful as a Lead Actor.

Kishore Kumar had great respect for the poets, singers, and musicians and have their influence. Some of them are Singer K. L. Saigal, Poet Rabindranath Tagore, Hollywood Singer Danny Kaye, and Singer Ahmed Rushdi.

Kishore Kumar then came up with a yodeling style of singing (inspired by Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton) in his songs that become an essential part of his singing. Yodeling used in songs ‘Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara, Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, And Chala Jata Hoon’ became massive hits.

After this, he never looked back and sang thousands of songs in various regional languages of India.

Music director S. D. Burman spotted Kumar’s talent for singing and provided him the training and encouraged Kumar a lot which resulted in having a great singer in the film industry.

As a singer, Kumar’s worked with many music directors that includes Khemchand Prakash, S. D. Burman, C. Ramchandra, Shankar Jaikishan, Ravi Shankar Sharma, Chitragupta, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalayanji Anandji, Rajesh Roshan, Shyamal Mitra, Khayyam, Bappi Lahiri, etc.

In his career, he also worked with Bollywood’s popular playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Alisha Chinai, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik, etc.

Kishore Kumar sang most of the songs for Rajesh Khanna (245 songs) in his career which is an unbeaten record for a singer-actor combination.
